Can I start numbering after the cover?
Yes. Choose the first page to carry a number, and separately the number it should show — so a cover and contents can be skipped while page three still reads as page one.
Will the numbers cover up existing content?
They are drawn in the margin, and the preview shows exactly where before you save. If a page has content there, move them to another corner.
